Baby & Toddler: Edible Playdough

If you have a toddler at home it's likely that you've gone through at least a few play dough sets. Whilst my little ones aren't overly crazy about play dough, it definitely has been a great distraction on occasion that has allowed for independent focused play. I have noticed a big difference in focus though when I do one thing. And that one thing (I must say a great Pro-Mama tip I've learnt from lots of failed afternoons) is presenting the activity in a way that looks enticing. And when that comes to play dough, that means keeping it on a  tray with a few cookie cutters, rolling pins, maybe a few other colours of play dough, some stickers or beads (you get the drill). Creating an enticing tray out of a relatively simple activity always makes for more focused play time for my little ones.

Now, back to the recipe. This is such a nice activity for me, because I can include my 9 month old in it too without the fear of her swallowing or licking the play dough. There are plenty of recipes out there for edible play dough (as well as edible play sand), so find one that works best for you ingredients wise.

You will need:

  • 1 cup hot chocolate mix or cocoa powder
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsps. oil
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt

Method:

1. Mix the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl

2. Mix the wet ingredients together in a separate mixing bowl

3. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients in 1/3 increments

4. Mix everything together by hand
